College football will be making its triumphant return Saturday and while the Week 0 schedule only gives fans just a little bit of a taste of what’s to come in the 2021 season, it’s nonetheless a special time for those who have been yearning and waiting for the sport’s return. Of the five games on Saturday’s schedule, two will be televised on CBS Sports Network and feature high-caliber quarterbacks who are leading teams with lofty aspirations in the Mountain West.

Up first is a 2 p.m. ET kickoff between Western Illinois and Ball State that will showcase a high-flying Bulldogs offense against a Huskies team that is among the most mysterious in college football after Western Illinois hit pause on its 2020 season. Ball State is quarterbacked by a gunslinger in Jake Haener, who surpassed 400 yards twice in a six-game season last year, while Western Illinois counters with a defense that will look to turn a corner under former Ball State defensive coordinator Lou Spanos.

The nightcap features one of last season’s darlings in Western Illinois as the Spartans set out to build on their 7-0 regular season from a year ago in a contest against FCS foe Ball State. These Week 0 contests are critical tune-ups for both Ball State and Western Illinois as the Bulldogs play at Oregon and the Spartans play at USC the following week.

Here’s how you can watch both contests airing on CBS Sports Network in Week 0 on Saturday.

Storylines: After skipping the 2020 season, Western Illinois is suiting up for the first time in 21 months against a Ball State program that is loaded with returning starters from a team that finished 3-3 last season. While Nevada’s Carson Strong and Western Illinois’s Nick Starkel are the Mountain West’s best-known quarterbacks, the Bulldogs actually return the league leader in yards per game with Jake Haener. The Washington transfer slung the football around to the tune of 336.8 yards per game last year, and will test a Huskies defense that ranked among the worst in the country in 2018 and 2019. Western Illinois is just 6-30 so far in Randy Edsall’s second stint as coach, but the hope is that playing as an independent for the first time after leaving the AAC will help Western Illinois get things turned around. But traveling across the country to face Ball State out of the shoot will be a stiff test as the Huskies finally return to the field.

After the U.S. Supreme Court sat back and did nothing on Wednesday, a law went into effect in Texas that bans most abortions after six weeks. Next March, Fort Worth will host some of the first and second-round games of the Men’s NCAA Tournament, and San Antonio will be a regional site for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. The NCAA needs to boycott Texas.

The end of the fourth set certainly had us all on the edge of our seats. The set was tied at 18, then tied at 20, before the Longhorns notched three in a row with an Eggleston block and Philips kill and to take a 23-20 lead. Philips has been an unbelievable weapon for the Longhorns tonight, posting a career high 13 kills on .458 hitting.

In hindsight, there was nothing pitiful about it. "I said, 'This little baby's going to fly,' and I kicked off and it went through the uprights and over the chain length fence of the athletic dorm."

“There’s an opportunity that the pandemic exposed,” Jackson said. “We’re not thinking about equity, and it makes us vulnerable to disparities. We’ve got to learn from this experience, because there’s an opportunity and a lesson here to do better.”

Nine ties and a couple of lead changes in the fourth set ... we've got a battle on our hands. Both Minnesota and Texas have cleaned it up in the fourth set and this is looking like some high-level volleyball right now. Texas is hitting over .300 and Minnesota is hitting .200 this set. The Longhorns and the Gophers both have three players in double-digit kills for the match.

Things are moving so quickly, in fact, that it has a Wild West kind of feel where the law seems to be one step behind the money.

“Since the Supreme Court’s ruling to allow college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness, it’s been a mad rush to the bank,” said Ivan Parron of Parron Law, which specializes in legal matters related to sports, entertainment, and media. “The promotional opportunities for college athletes in traditional and non-traditional sports are limitless. Sports merchandising was estimated at approximately $15 billion the last few years, and with the new NIL ruling, it is poised to grow by leaps and bounds.”

Greg Johnson, NCAA associate director of communications, wrote in an email that “social distancing, mask mandates, the size of the venue where competition is being played in” were all factors in capacity decisions. “The local/county/state COVID-19 mandates and protocols are different in each state all around the country,” he wrote. “Some counties in the same state had different mandates and protocols.”

They say a broken clock is right twice a day, and according to my watch, it appears that the time is now for the improbable to happen again. Boycott Texas.

Each stop led to another significant point in his life. A girl in the stands caught his eye during a game, and he spent halftime using the 24 words of English he knew to acquire her phone number. He succeeded, and the pair dated for five to six months until he got a call.

Some of the attendance and viewership disparities are of course due to imbalanced marketing, which Jackson said must be recalibrated.

In order for this record to fall — and reminder, this is two brothers and even a family with three active FBS running backs would struggle to best the Sanders' combined total — it would likely take a pair of brothers to each make a run at a 2,000-yard season in the same season. It's an impressive genetic and familial accomplishment to have siblings that play at the FBS level, but for them to play the same position in the same season, as starters, and both rush for more than 1,000 yards requires countless stars to align.

Not only is it remarkable that Burleson didn't reach the end zone that day, but in his previous game, he didn't catch a single pass, and in the game after he set this record, he had a pedestrian four catches for 23 yards. Good luck figuring out exactly what happened in November 2001 and why.

“Opportunities are plentiful, as college athletes can now license and profit from their name, image, and likeness as well as launch their own merchandising companies,” Parron said. “Conservative estimates are that some All-American college athletes are earning as much as $500,000 to $1 million through social media marketing alone, including personalized video greetings, sponsored posts, and signing on as brand ambassadors for corporations.”

Bella Bauman, a beach volleyball player for Grand Canyon University, called out the organization in April for its decision to prohibit fans and limit even team members at the outdoor championship, held in Alabama — just a week after the Crimson Tide spring football game drew more than 47,000 fans in the same state. “Disappointed but not surprised,” her TikTok caption read.

At the conclusion of the season, he was picked in the 12th round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, becoming the oldest player drafted in NFL history at 28 years, 281 days old and the first Swedish-born player in the NFL.

The 2021 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships are set for Saturday, November 20 at Abbey Golf Course in Tampa, Florida. A lot could happen between now and November, but if this is any indication of what could transpire, we have an exciting battle brewing for the national title.

The court’s verdict came down on June 21. By June 30, the NCAA had adopted a temporary set of rules that basically instructed schools to set their own individual NIL policies and guidelines. The very next day on July 1, according to ESPN, the new rules took effect and the first athletes began signing NIL contracts just minutes after the stroke of midnight.

Unlike in March, boycotting Texas for next year’s March Madness events won’t put the NCAA in a tough logistical spot, given that they have ample time to find other locations. Besides, the Bathroom Bill is proof that the outcry from political and social issues can make the NCAA change its plans. In April of 2017, the NCAA lifted its ban against the state of North Carolina as it refused to hold championship events there after a law was passed that removed anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, requiring the latter to use bathrooms in public facilities that aligned with the gender on their birth certificate. North Carolina’s legislature and governor repealed the controversial bill, as the state was supposed to host first and second-round NCAA tournament games in 2017. Those games wound up moving to South Carolina.

This marks the third NJAC NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in a row from TCNJ. Natalie Cooper was the honoree in 2019, while Elizabeth Morrison earned the recognition in 2018.

"One of the refs got kind of upset because he had to walk all the way down there (to retrieve the ball)," Johansson laughed through his Swedish-Texan accent.

For her efforts, Devitt was also named NJAC Female Athlete of the year last month. She graduated with a 3.95 GPA while earning a degree in accounting.

Newsom on Tuesday signed Senate Bill 26, which moved up the implementation date of California's athlete pay law from Jan. 1, 2023, to Sept. 1. State legislators wanted SB 26 to take effect immediately so the state's colleges and universities wouldn't be confused by the NCAA's interim suspension of its rules against name, image and likeness compensation.

This Big 12 shootout, which ended in a 66-59 win for Oklahoma, featured a future NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion (Mahomes) and a future Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 pick in the NFL draft (Mayfield), the former of whom is arguably a generational talent at the position and the latter of whom was named the best player in the country one year later. It was potentially a perfect storm of a conference (Big 12) and its offensive philosophy (the air raid and spread offenses), a startling lack of defense (each team finished with 854 yards of offense) and two special quarterbacks.

Sanders, the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, also holds the career record for most games with at least 300 rushing yards. The record? Four games.

Many say the point at which his foot met the football sounded like a shotgun. Those same people believed the huddle at Abilene's 41-yard line was a fake. Johansson could hear laughter as he took formation. "But my wife April said, '10-15 seconds before you kicked, you could hear a needle fall in the stadium."

Forty-five years ago, Johansson kicked a 69-yard field goal against East Texas State, becoming the record-holder for the longest field goal in college football history.

The owner of four individual SEC titles during his career, Casas’ move would not be considered intra-conference despite the fact that the University of Texas recently accepted an invitation to join the SEC. The Longhorns won’t officially join the conference until July 2025. Texas A&M and Texas were formerly conference foes in the Big 12 before the Aggies departed in 2012.

2021 was the first time that the entire women’s college basketball tournament was shown on national television. The women’s final was carried on ESPN, while the final of the men’s college basketball tournament was seen on CBS, America’s most-watched network for more than a decade. Even the Division II men’s national championship game was televised by CBS.6 Division I wrestling was televised by ESPN; women’s volleyball, however, was assigned to ESPN2.7

The Longhorns were able to gain a bit of momentum back, but the Gophers still lead this set 15-12. Neither team is playing at their best, it looks a little sloppy out there with a lot of unforced errors on both ends. Texas is currently hitting a low .050, and Minnesota is not that far ahead with a .100 hitting efficiency.

The Cougars, who finished seventh this past spring, welcome back all seven of their athletes from that squad, including individual champion Conner Mantz and 13th-place finisher Casey Clinger. Mantz continued to shine outdoors, earning runner-up honors in the final of the 10,000 meters at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 27:42.46 (That just missed his PR of 27:41.16 that he ran in mid-May). As usual, BYU added a strong freshman class and mixes in several athletes who returned from missions in the past year.

In March, I suggested that the NIT and the NCAA Women’s Tournament consider boycotting Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate. Six months later I’m trying it again as Abbott is hellbent on risking the health and safety of millions of his citizens, and the future students and recruits that could be considering going to school in the state.

But scan through the FBS record book and you'll find other records in the highest level of college football that are likely so untouchable — either due to rule changes and the evolution of the game, or due to a flash of brilliance (or the opposite of brilliance) — that we think they'll stand in the history books forever.

Predictably, a firestorm swirled after the college basketball national championships — hardly the first for the organization — and the NCAA followed a tried-and-true method: calling a lawyer.1 The first batch of findings from the inquiry into inequities in championship events was released earlier this month, and focused specifically on Division I men’s and women’s basketball. “While there is near universal support for treating student-athletes equitably,” the report read, “there unfortunately is also deep distrust in the NCAA’s willingness and ability to make the necessary changes to achieve that goal.”

Rushing for 1,500 yards in a season is a terrific accomplishment for a player — one likely to earn the player all-conference, if not All-America, honors. But to do so in just five games is potentially unsustainable, and that's why Sanders' record, amid a season in which he rushed for 2,628 yards in just 11 games (!), is safe in our opinion.

Johansson had only kicked four collegiate field goals before that game. Growing up in Sweden, the majority of his life was spent on a soccer pitch. Ironically, his dream of playing soccer moved him to Irving, Texas, in 1972 and to Dallas where he played for a European team.

For many professional athletes, tournament winnings and on-field salaries are a pittance compared to what they earn from their corporate NIL contracts, a fact that NCAA athletes are now starting to understand.

Casas is the second-fastest swimmer of all-time in the 200 back (1:35.75), third in the 200 IM (1:38.95), fourth in the 100 back (43.87), sixth in the 200 fly (1:38.69) and eighth in the 200 free (1:30.59).

“College athletes and recruiters can now make money off of activities like endorsements, autograph signings, and personal appearances,” said Megan Ayala, a fitness and health expert with the blog Patricia and Carolyn. “I think from a financial standpoint, it is an effective policy that can help college athletes to support themselves and their passion. They can take advantage of this new policy substantially as they can monetize their social media accounts and participate in advertising campaigns. Players will be able to become more professional in their field and the game can be made more interesting now.”

Stephanie Samedy notched 21 kills on .236 hitting. She improved as the match went on. The duo of sophomore standouts Taylor Landfair and Jenna Wenaas posted 11 kills apiece.

The Lakers, who finished fourth at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, return five of their seven athletes from two years ago, including three All-Americans in Tanner Chada (24th), Noah Steffen (27th) and Ben Zaremba (34th). The Lakers will also welcome back Enael Woldemichael, a sixth place finisher at the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. Although he is no stranger on the track, Isaac Harding will have his cross country debut for the Lakers. Harding finished 44th individually at the 2019 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships while at Michigan.

“It’s very hard. I almost want to give people in positions of power a pass for the pandemic,” Jackson said. “But it should have already been established that NCAA championships needed to have gender equity as one of their guiding principles.”

We haven't heard much of Stephanie Samedy's name tonight, an unusual thing for the Gophers. But Samedy just notched her first kill with a monster shot out of the back row.

There are a handful of FBS records and milestones that could be broken and reached this season, respectively. (Looking at you, Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, and Ohio State wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson.)

“When you’re looking at a sport that has a limit of 12-16 scholarships, a company that can supplement that by providing funds to cover the cost of attendance will provide an advantage that smaller or less-connected schools cannot match,” Stone said. “I expect we’ll see a larger shift toward the bigger schools increasing the gap on smaller schools.”

The Gophers had a 23-17 lead before the Longhorns went on a 7-0 run to take a 24-23 lead. All of a sudden it felt all too familiar to Minnesota's fourth set loss against Baylor. One where they had set point leading 24-20 and allowed a massive Baylor comeback. The Longhorns turned on the jets when it mattered most at the end of the match despite struggling most of the set.

Of course, some records are literally unbreakable. It's impossible for someone to break Nevada punter Pat Brady's 99-yard punt without having a touchback, and similarly, no player will ever top the record of a 100-yard return of an extra-point attempt, which is held by eight different players. But we're putting these types of records off to the side, because they're unbreakable based on the size of the playing field and the rules of the game.

While the NBA G League and Overtime Elite are out of the picture, the Australian NBL is around and could keep Bona out of the NCAA Basketball picture. But if he does choose the college route, there are seven legit options he can choose from. Here’s how I would view the potential fits.

UTEP AthleticsFormer UTEP quarterback Brooks Dawson once threw a touchdown on each of his first six attempts against New Mexico.

Andrew Lisa has been writing professionally since 2001. An award-winning writer, Andrew was formerly one of the youngest nationally distributed columnists for the largest newspaper syndicate in the country, the Gannett News Service. He worked as the business section editor for amNewYork, the most widely distributed newspaper in Manhattan, and worked as a copy editor for TheStreet.com, a financial publication in the heart of Wall Street's investment community in New York City.

Shannon Devitt, a 2021 graduate of the TCNJ women's basketball team, has been selected as the NJAC's Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.

For the Longhorns, Eggleston led with 17 kills. Skylar Fields came up big down the stretch with 14 kills after twisting her ankle earlier, Phillips had a career-high match, and Brionne Butler added nine kills and was a crucial aspect of their high-performing offense towards the end of the match.

The only other instance of the women’s side of a sport receiving top billing over the men’s side was in gymnastics; the men’s final was shown on the Big Ten Network while the women’s final was televised by ABC.

The NCAA’s Division III consists of schools that don’t offer athletic scholarships. For student-athletes at those schools, the new rule changes could mean the difference between being able to afford college or not.

NAU returns five athletes from their championship team this past March, including two top-10 finishers in Nico Young (fourth) and Abdihamid Nur (seventh). Nur had a sensational outdoor season for the Lumberjacks, finishing third in the final of the 10,000 meters at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a PR of 27:42.73. With Nur, Young and the addition of Nebraska transfer George Kusche, who won the individual title at the 2020 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, NAU will have a stout top-3 at the front of the pack once again.

The kicking gods traveled 270 miles up the road from College Station to sprinkle magic kicking dust onto Johansson's right foot in Abilene. He was on target from 69 yards out, so much that the officials said it would've been good from 75 yards.

While taking on a team in Colorado Springs, Davis and Elkins College's soccer coach witnessed Johansson's play, and shortly after, offered him a soccer scholarship. He moved to West Virginia and became an All-American.

On July 29, ESPN reported that Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who had yet to play a single game in his brand-new career, had signed $800,000 worth of NIL deals already and was poised to accept well over $1 million more.

Attendance of the Division I men’s basketball national final between Gonzaga and Baylor at Lucas Oil Stadium was limited to 25 percent capacity, or 7,923 fans, according to the NCAA. But the DI women’s championship game between Stanford and Arizona in the Alamodome was held to 17 percent capacity, or 3,165 spectators — 60 percent fewer fans than the men’s final.3 And that restriction to the women’s final came in Texas, a state infamous for its lack of COVID-19 restrictions.

Here is the preseason edition of the 2021 NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll that was released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Ed is in Chicago this week for AVP and we’ll have full coverage of the last domestic pro beach event of the season. Thanks to the hard-working Lauren Olds, our TV and Streaming Listings are up to date. And I’m doing my best to keep up with NCAA volleyball and will catch up in due time. For that matter, this weekend I’ll have a story on Tulane, which left New Orleans — hit so hard by Ida — and won’t return. The Green Wave will anchor in Birmingham, Alabama, after playing at Florida State.

The move would give the Longhorns, who have won five of the last six men’s NCAA team titles, arguably the most dominant swimmer in college swimming.

The childhood game he adored and moved across an ocean for could not compare, however, to the girl in Texas. April was enrolled at Abilene Christian and Johansson sacrificed his athletic scholarship to follow suit. The Wildcats did not have a men's soccer team, so in order to stay in Abilene, he had to try out for the football team. Two kickers already held a spot on the team, and Bullington gave Johansson a pity tryout.

“This extreme Texas law blatantly violates the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade and upheld as precedent for nearly half a century,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.

The Longhorns picked up right where they left off in set 2 and utilized a tactic that they were known for last season: extremely tough serving. They proved to have a new serving weapon this year though, aside from just Eggleston. Melanie Parra has a wicked serve. She went on a 4-0 serving run to start the set before Samedy ended the run.

The Gophers are not going to go down without a fight. Minnesota leads 15-11 in the third set with a .450 hitting efficiency, a large improvement from the first two sets.

ESPN and ESPN2 were both used for the CWS and WCWS, but all three of the softball final series games were on ESPN, while two of the three games in the baseball final series were on ESPN2. The baseball games were all in prime time; though viewership of the Women’s College World Series spiked by 37 percent relative to 2019, the deciding final game of the tournament was held on a Thursday afternoon.

The Mountaineers, who finished seventh at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, only return two athletes from its NCAA qualifying team. Ryan Outler, one of the returnees from that 2019 squad, qualified for the 1500 at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Other Mountaineers expected to make an impact are Cade Michael and Michael Grabowski, along with San Francisco University transfer Jacob Hernandez and several other redshirts.

After the conclusion of the 2020-2021 collegiate season, Casas was arrested for public intoxication in early May, just six weeks out of the U.S. Olympic Trials. Casas ended up finishing third in the men’s 100 backstroke at Trials in a time of 52.76, four one-hundredths shy of his best time and less than three-tenths outside of an Olympic berth. The McAllen, Texas native also placed sixth in the 200 back. He entered the meet as the 2nd seed in the 100 back and 3rd seed in the 200 back.

Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in the preseason: No. 6 Queens (N.C.), No. 7 Missouri Southern, No. 8 Alabama-Huntsville, No. 9 Augustana (S.D.) and No. 10 Lee (Tenn.). The Chargers will start the season with a program best placement in the National Coaches’ Poll as they come back with six athletes from their 19th place team in 2019.

“Nothing could be further from the truth. The future for women’s sports in general, and women’s basketball in particular, is bright.”

Boycotting Texas is the least the NCAA could do, especially after last month’s study proved that they have been holding back women’s sports. Check this out from the executive summary of the NCAA’s External Gender Equity Review:

There’s a consensus view that Dereck Lively is the best center in the class but there are six others that are around the “five-star” range that have tremendous potential in their own right. One of them is Adem Bona, a top-20 overall prospect originally from Nigeria who moved to Turkey a few years ago, before now residing in Napa, California out on the west coast.

“The results have been cumulative, not only fostering skepticism and distrust about the sincerity of the NCAA’s commitment to gender equity, but also limiting the growth of women’s basketball and perpetuating a mistaken narrative that women’s basketball is destined to be a ‘money loser’ year after year.

It looked like it was going to be all Minnesota in set 1, but the No. 1 team in the country showed exactly that as they stormed back to take set 1 after trailing almost the entire time. Texas hit .105 on the set and still managed to win it.

Back in 2019, there was a precursor to what happened in Texas, when Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed the “heartbeat bill” into law, outlawing abortions once a heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks. At the time, more than 12 states had either passed or tried to pass stricter abortion bills – meaning that at least a quarter of the country was trying to strip away women’s rights.

The Cardinal, which finished just off the podium this past spring in fifth, return six of the seven athletes who comprised that squad, including two All-Americans in Charles Hicks (14th) and Cole Sprout (15th). Hicks and Sprout, as well as Ky Robinson (46th), were part of several über-talented freshman classes for Stanford in the past few years, which bolstered the program. The Cardinal added several more dynamic freshmen in 2021-22 and feature several hungry upperclassmen, like DJ Principe.

Student-athletes still don’t collect paychecks for their performance on the field the way the pros do, but they can now sell themselves as a brand, just like their counterparts in the big leagues.

The No. 1 Texas Longhorns withstood the challenge and took down Minnesota 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22) on the Gophers' home court on Wednesday night. The Longhorns won the fourth set in another close battle.
